Established in 1849, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has grown to be the world’s largest sheriff’s department, with 14,043 personnel, 8,142 of whom are deputy sheriffs. Unlike sheriff’s offices in some areas of the United States, the LASD is a “full-service” law enforcement agency responsible for patrolling 3,154 square miles, comprising the unincorporated area of the county and 40 of the county’s incorporated cities. The population of the areas patrolled by the Sheriff’s Department is estimated to be in excess of 2.7 million people; and this mission is accomplished by 3,440 deputy sheriff’s assigned to 23 regional stations. The Department operates the world’s largest jail system, comprised of 7 facilities with a total average daily inmate population of 17,470. The LASD Homicide Bureau is staffed by approximately 100 detectives and 23 professional support staff. In addition to investigating more than 400 murders each year, the Bureau also investigates suicides, deaths of children under 14 years of age, workplace fatalities, officer/deputy involved shootings and adult missing persons. Any municipal law enforcement agency in Los Angeles County may request the assistance of the Homicide Bureau and it is provided without cost to the requesting municipality.
